BIG HITTERS FROM CRAWLEY DOWN LTC SERVE UP £333.00 FOR MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE. Crawley Down Lawn Tennis Club held a successful Doubles Tournament at King George V Field, Sandy Lane, on 17 September 2009. Eight members took part, Elsena Marsden, Helen Bentley, Liz McDonnell, Carolin Boyle, June Bedding, Jane Arnott, Tessie Cook, and Harry Bentley. All enjoyed good tennis in the sunshine followed by a light lunch.

Elsena was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, and is in remission after undergoing aggressive chemotherapy at St. Luke’s Cancer Centre in Guildford. Looking for a ‘cancer’ project for which to raise money, Elsena found the ‘Anyone for Tennis?’ e-mail had just dropped into her inbox! This idea for raising funds was e-mailed to all tennis friends at Crawley Down LTC, and the Committee were delighted to give their support.

The names of our two winners, Helen Bentley and Tessie Cook, will go into a Draw organised by Marie Curie Cancer Care. Prizes include tickets for Wimbledon 2010 Finals, a tennis lesson with a top coach, a personal backstage tour of Wimbledon, and a year’s worth of tennis balls for the winner’s club. Good luck to Helen and Tessie!

More Club members donated gorgeous and delicious prizes for a raffle, a quiz was held, and the total sum raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care was £333.00! Many thanks to the event organisers, Elsena Marsden and Helen and Harry Bentley. Everyone concerned said that the tournament was so much fun that we must make it bigger and better next year!
